DESCRIZIONE:
A monument without its own intrinsic history.
The installation is recent and fully authorized.
The Latin words engraved on the stone:
“UBI IPSA LAURA
VIRIQUE SUUM
PORREXERUNT IBI
DESCREDIT CLAUDIUM”
can be paraphrased as follows:
Where the laurel itself and men offered what was theirs, there the poet Claudius met his decline.
- The laurel is probably a reference to Laura.
- Claudius, on the other hand, is likely a symbolic reference to Petrarch.
In a modern interpretation, we could say that the text highlights the relationship between glory and love — ideals represented by Laura — and the human, fragile side of the poet, who in that place experienced doubt and a sense of loss.
The sword, embedded in the stone, recalls legend and mystery, evoking both the strength of feelings and the passage of time.
This place invites visitors to reflect on the connection between poetic inspiration, love, and memory — elements central to Petrarch’s life and works.
