DESCRIPTION:
Water flows here from the fountain.
It was once used to water the animals and by housewives of every era to wash their dirty clothes.
On the edge, a trachyte stone bears the inscription:
“MULIERES FECERUNT EX SPICARUM FRUMENTI COLLECTIONE”
which means:
“The women built it with the proceeds from the collection of wheat ears.”
But one should not be misled: this inscription was not originally made for the washhouse. It originally belonged to the parish church and, until 1874, was placed above the entrance portal, as noted by the scholar Salomonio. It was only later transferred here.
